3 Configuring OSM
Before using OSM applications to manage your system.
Configure the server using the OSM Low-Level Link (see Configuring the Server).
If using HP Insight Remote Support Advanced for remote support services, see Insight Remote
Support Advanced for NonStop, located in the external NonStop Service Information collection
of NTL.
Configure OSM to Avoid Java Memory Errors
NOTE: It is possible to start and run a new server without performing OSM configuration. However,
HP strongly recommends that you perform OSM configuration tasks shortly after installing a new
system. If you do not perform OSM configuration, your system will have certain user, security, and
network limitations.
You can also change many OSM default settings by creating and using an OSMCONF file from
the OSMINI template. For information on these configurable parameters and how to make
OSMCONF changes take effect, see the OSM Configuration Guide.
Enabling Java Next Generation Plug-in to Avoid OSM Memory Errors
When logging on to OSM Service Connection version T0682 H02 ADL and later, if OSM detects
that Java next generation plug-in is disabled, a pop-up dialog directs you to enable Java next
generation plug-in, as appropriate, so that the required memory settings can take effect
automatically:
When using Internet Explorer 8.0 or 9.0, Java next generation plug-in should be enabled,
per the instructions that follow.
When using Internet Explorer 10.0 (supported in compatibility mode only), Java next generation
plug-in must remain disabled.
NOTE: If OSM (T0682 H02 ADL and later) detects that Java next generation plug-in is
already enabled, you will not be prompted to disable it, but must do so to establish an OSM
Service Connection session with IE 10.
To enable Java next generation plug-in:
1. From the Windows Start menu, open Java Control Panel by the method appropriate for your
console:
For Windows Server 2008, select Control Panel > Programs > Java (32-bit)
For Windows Server 2003, select Control Panel > Java
2. In the Java Control Panel, click on the Advanced tab.
3. Under Java Plug-in, place a check mark in the box next to “Enable the next-generation Java
Plug-in.
4. Click OK, and close all Internet Explorer windows before reconnecting to the OSM Service
Connection.
NOTE: When using older OSM versions (that require Java 6) on the same console, you will be
instructed to disable next generation plug-in.
